Christmas 2004

Vicki Lewis-Thumm

Which facet of my life do you want to know about first?

Occupation is always a good place to start. Isn’t that the famous question that each and every seat mate on longer airplane rides ask you the minute you get all tucked in and ready for a quiet, peaceful flight; “What do you do for a living?” Just knowing that you’re stuck with each other in such tight quarters for the next 10,000 miles or 8 hours, conversation seems to be an option to pass the time.  If you answer the question, it usually sparks another question and before you know it, you’re in the midst of a conversation with a complete stranger. I usually read a book or sleep so whoever gets stuck with me will have a boring trip if he’s looking for conversation.

Just for the sake of answering the question, “I’m a butterfly”. See, I told you. That’s why I always avoid conversation on planes. Because people with so-called “normal” occupations can never quite comprehend what it is really that I do for a living. In his pre-retirement years, when my husband was a magician and ran a magic business called “the magic hands” it was even worse. Now that he put away the magic wand and hung up his multi-colored vest of silk for good, all we do is travel and perform our Show Act called “Visiona”, A Symphony in Light and Color. Visiona is a nostalgic skirt dance, an old variety act  which died out in the 1930’s. In my private life, I’m Vicki. But when we’re on the road, I’m “Visiona”. These two make up my identity and I feel like both of them; Vicki, and Visiona.

In times when we’re not on the road, we just enjoy a peaceful, quiet life at home in southern Germany. We have one child; that is, Chico our beautiful 3 year old white maltese doggy. He is our joy and our sunshine.

Well, that’s what I do now that I’ve reached this phase of life called middle-age. It seems I’ve reached the more quiet phase of life when I think back to the hectic magic years before Manfred’s retirement.
