I’ve always loved Gingerbread houses, and since I’ve lived in Germany, I’ve admired them in windows of Bakeries and Conditors (Confection Bakers) every year at Christmas time. When I saw a picture in a Halloween Book (which I bought for the 3rd prize for Best Costume at my Halloween party), showing how to make a Gingerbread Haunted House I decided to attempt making one for myself.
The idea in the book uses COOKIES instead of baking your own gingerbread, which is a quick and simple way to make a Gingerbread house. All you have to do is buy all the cookies, ice cream cones and candies for decoration, powdered sugar for icing to hold it together, and you’re ready to make a house !
I just used my imagination and started building without a clue of HOW the structure would be. I just started, and let it go from there. This being my first attempt and just a whim; it’s not perfect and lacks many small details. But next time I’ll put a lot of attention to small details and I’m sure it’ll be a great CENTERPIECE for my Halloween Dessert Buffet at next year’s party.
My original idea was to have the Haunted House inhabited by spooks, PEEP marshmallow ghosts that Bim sent me from America; but since I made the house a few weeks after Halloween, all the peeps were gone ! So I used the little plastic figures of Skeleton Bride and Groom as inhabitants of the house. They’re the only thing non-edible.
My little friend Elio from next door was fascinated with the Spook Castle. He comes over every day and eats a piece of it. Now it’s missing one of its cone towers, a half of the door and many candy corn decorations. The two jelly candy frogs that were in the garden of the castle have also disappeared! Maybe Elio will turn into a handsome Prince?
